Google Adwords and Google Adsense go hand in hand with each other, a very brief introduction to how it works is : People will advertise their product or service with Google Adwords on a PPC (pay per click) program. Publishers will then post advertisements on their websites and receive a cut of the money made by every click on an advertisement. Simple.

Google Adsense is a great way of monetizing your blog without destroying your readers trust. The ads that Google display can be extremely relevant and I would even go as far as to say they can be helpful to visitors.

With the ads being so relevant you can get a good CTR and a greater amount of money per click than you will with any other advertisement publisher network.

The only downside that I can see to having ads on your blog is that it may take away potential sales if your blog promotes a product or service you sell.

If your blog is mainly giving people information, or telling them how to do things then I think Google Adsense could be a great addition to your website. If you read the Adsense case studies then it will probably get you all excited that you are going to make thousands of pounds by just adding the advertisements to your pages.

By adding the advertisements to your blog posts, in my opinion it will be very beneficial to your SEO, it will give you the motivation to write more quality content and update your blog more frequently. If you’re lucky enough to get lots of visitors to your blog, you may also see another impressive revenue stream.

This doesn’t mean that you still can’t promote your product or service, granted your CTR might be a little bit lower, but you may see greater revenue coming from your main website. Having spoke to some publishers who are now earning most of their revenue from Adsense, I can’t praise the program enough.

Introduction to Making Money With Adsense

Before you attempt to make money from adsense you must realise that it will take time and it will require a lot of writing. If you don’t like writing then you could buy content from someone else (providing it is unique) or your probably best just giving up. Before reading this I would advise swatting up on the WordPress system and reading about Adsense in forums. Just to familiarise yourself with how the system works. I didn’t want to go into it in great detail, so I just skipped straight to the interesting bits and made references to useful resources so hopefully you won’t get stuck.

1 Choosing Your Niche and Keyword Research For Adsense

Before you start your internet venture you need to put a lot of thought about what you are going to write or blog about. The blogging software we are going to use to create your blog is WordPress. WordPress is a blogging system that a lot of webmasters use to blog about absolutely anything. It is free of charge and one of the most powerful and flexible tools available on the web today.

Keyword research is essential before you go jumping into your chosen topic. You need to choose a keyword with a relatively high search volume (4,000 searches or more) and a low competition. The lower the competition the less time it is going to take you to rank well for that keyword. You can use the Adwords keyword tool to help you choose the keywords you should optimize for. For example if your chosen niche is “dogs” then you could optimize for the keyword “dog training” or “dog behaviour” as long as they don’t have much competition and there search volume is quite high. You can try and optimize for the higher competition keywords once your blog is a bit more established. All this research is extremely important for your next step… Choosing Your Domain Name.

2 Choosing The Optimum Domain Name To Make Money

By this stage you should have chosen what keywords you are going to optimize your blog for. For this example I will stay consistent and say we are going to optimize for the keyword “dog training”. For you to rank well for this keyword in the shortest space of time your domain name should try and include your keywords. “http://www.dog-training.com” would be the best possible domain name for these keywords. It has the maximum possible relevancy and “.com” is not just focussed at one country like “.co.uk” for example. You could search for and register your domain name at Nativespace which is an extremely cheap and reliable hosting company which I use to host my websites (they have never let me down yet). Once you have signed up for hosting you are ready to install WordPress on your server. This very simple with Nativespace.

3 Installing WordPress and Configuring Plugins

Log into your Nativespace or other hosting account. I am going to use Nativespace for this example as it is the only one I have access to. This is where Nativespace comes in useful. It has a built in MySQL wizard that lets you bypass complicated commands. Just set up a MySQL database by choosing the option below after you have logged into your admin area of your hosting account. Add yourself as a user and note your username and password for WordPress as you will need these later on. Everything you need for your website is in the control panel. One thing I like about this hosting provider is that it comes with lot’s of useful out of the box packages that you can implement yourself into your website.

http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress is a guide if you get stuck when you are installing WordPress.

Customising and Optimizing WordPress

The first thing you should do after installing WordPress is get the template or theme looking how you want it. You can download WordPress themes from http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ or if you can’t find the one you want from there you could do a search for “Wordpress themes”. Many themes are available to download for free and depending on your confidence you can edit them to look exactly how you want to.

A good e-book for optimizing WordPress for SEO is : http://www.top10seotips.com/pdf/SEO-in-a-Day.pdf I suggest you read this book from beginning to end as it will provide you will all the information you need to optimize your WordPress for SEO. It will tell you about all the plugins you need as well as how to configure them to work the best.

4 Writing Your Content To Make Money with Adsense

This is by far the most important part of the whole system. Without any content unless you have some super secret way of getting mass traffic (please email me how) you will not make any money what so ever. Once you have your WordPress theme looking how you want it, it is finally time to start blogging. The better and more relevant your content is the better your content is the better you will get ranked in Google and the more chance there is of people linking to it. This will also work with the more content you have there will be more chance of someone linking to it. So how much do I mean when I mean you need to create a lot of content? You need to be writing about 5, 400-450 word articles every day and for every 3 articles you write the other 2 should be submitted in article directories such as Ezine Articles. When you submit your articles to directories you should include 2 links back to your site in the author bio. 1 back to your home page and the other to a sub page of your blog. For example:

For more information visit my <link to home page>seo</link> website for <link to subpage>ppc tips</link>.

This way you have promoted two pages and Google likes it a lot when you have deep links to your pages. “Deep links” is just a term for when somebody links to a content page on your site which is not your home page. You should link to a different content page in every article you submit to an article directory. The more deep links you have to other pages the better your site is going to perform and the more chance you have of getting more links to your site.

Just remember if you get stuck with anything or have absolutely any question you can always Google your problem or email me and I will be more than happy to help.

5. Stick at it … Don’t Give Up

It’s took me absolutely ages to write this article, in hope that someone will read it, find it useful and maybe link to it..? I hope this helps and gives some of you the motivation you need, not to give up and to carry on writing about the subject you love. Don’t concentrate on your Advertising revenue, that should just be a bonus. You won’t get anywhere if you give up! .. Please also keep me updated on your progress with the comment form below.

When adding Google AdSense to your web page, it is important that you don’t stuff all the AdSense javascript near the top of the page. You should only ever consider adding Google AdSense to your page if it has a really useful resource or at least 200 words of content (that is a bare minimum). You should try add the AdSense code beneath your content and navigation and then use CSS to position it where you want.

This way Google will index your navigation links (other pages) and your content before realising that you are not just trying to make money from AdSense. It is also better from an accessibility point of view, because if someone requires CSS to be turned off then they can read your content before being bombarded by advertisements.

It has not been proven that putting your AdSense javascript near the top of your page can harm your ranking, however from personal experience I would advise you not to do this as I find it easier to rank when my advertisements are at the bottom of the HTML source code. You should do this with all javascript and not just Adsense, unless you want the javascript to be in the <head> part of the document.

Try and make the rest of your navigation look like your AdSense, this is not agains the Adsense terms and conditions and it will also encourage more people to click your advertisements, because they look like they are part of your site. You are not even damaging your users experience by doing this because the Adsense advertisements are always relevant.

Having Google Adsense on your pages can be a good performance indicator of how you are doing with growing traffic to your website. Not only are you keeping track of how many pageviews you get, but you are making money at the same time. This money could be possibly be re-invested into search engine optimization.

I can’t personally see anything bad about using the Adsense program. I mean can you think of anything better than getting paid to optimize your site? I can’t. When Adsense is used in conjunction with Google Analytics you have yourself a very powerful analytical tool that lets you monetize your website or blog.

When you see your Adsense earnings improving this will make you continue wanting to optimize your website because you are getting monetary rewards. Also if you decide want to optimize your site so that Google Adsense is your main source of income, Google analytics will definately help you. Using it with Google Analytics will help you determine which pages haven’t got as much of a click through rate as the others. With careful tweeking and playing about with individual pages with information with Google Analytics you can make a very good living just from Google Adsense.

This is not a sales pitch by the way, it is just a suggestion that you may or may not take on board to monitize your website or blog. I’m not writing about it to tell you about the money you can make. I am writing about it, so that you can understand that you can use it as a good tool for SEO. If you really don’t want to make money from your blog because you think it is wrong. You could earn the money but then re-invest it in a PPC campaign. This way you are not making any money as such from Google, you are just getting some very high quality traffic.. for free!

Google Adsense is a fantastic tool for bloggers which allows them to easily and legally monetise there blog. All you need to do is get your website accepted by Google Adsense and then insert there small customised code into your html web pages. If you use tools such as wordpress for your blog then there are plugins available that you can download that will add your adsense ad units to your page without any great difficulty from yourself.

Google adsense can allow a webmaster with a high traffic blog to make a serious amount of money. I am relatively new to the Google adsense plan, so I am still learning with it aswell, tweaking it (modifying the text colors and background colors) trying to get the best click through rate on my advertisements. Google adsense is NOT an easy way to make money if you do not have a high traffic website or blog. It takes careful configuration and maybe years to develop the sort of traffic to your blog needed to earn big money from the adsense program.

There has been alot of debate about using the program because of the extra bits of javascript you add to your code, which could be seen as search engine unfriendly, maybe it would be an idea to get your blog ranking well for your choice of keyword before you add Google adsense to your website. That way you are much more likely to get accepted by the program.

Also be sure to read the Google Adsense Terms and Conditions before using it. I am saying this because they are very strict and do not stand for people trying to rob them and there advertisers using click fraud. So do not click your own ads, because you will not cheat Google and you will almost definately get banned.

Wishing you all great success with the Google Adsense Program !
